What is a woman made of?

Today is International Women’s Day. A day that is historically linked to the women’s rights movement. That’s complicated for me for reasons I won’t bog down this post with.

I’ll just focus on what’s simple.

Women have possessed an incalculable, intrinsic worth since the day God “stretched his hand out and brought a bone to life”. That’s a line from my spoken word poem, “What is a Woman Made of?”.

Here’s a few more lines from this piece that resonate deeply with me.

No poem could ever do her justice.
Words cannot hold the weight of her substance.
Yes, there is beauty in her body,
But there is glory is her soul.

So, I attempted to do what I admit is impossible—write a poem about a subject that transcends poetry, because she is poetry. I have a whole poem on that concept that I will share another time.

I’m not a feminist (or a masculist, or an anything -ist), but I do know that women are worth writing about. So I did. And I hope it resonates deeply with you, too.

I hope you watch and share it with some women who come to mind.
